In the past few decades since the retrocession, the Taiwan forestry industry has evolved and progressed through various stages of logging, to tree improvement and intensive silviculture, to ecosystems-based sustainable management and to “cultural forestry.” In each stage, there are different problems that need to be resolved.
Director Li, has been devoted to the forestry profession for thirty-eight years and believes that, though challenges exist, Taiwanese forests and their stewards have unlimited potential. Overall, the outlook for Taiwan forestry is both optimistic and pessimistic. In this paper, Director Li discusses ten pressing issues for the forestry and its profession in Taiwan. It is the author’s hope to candidly reveal and communicate with the public the challenges and opportunities for forestry in Taiwan and plot a path to sustainable forestry that supports Taiwan’s future needs.
