“Love Tender Save the Crabs” Activity Held at Orchid Island and Green Island

Orchid Island and Green Island, the most important habitats of the coconut crab (Birgus latro) around the Taiwan area are being destroyed due to increasing tourism. The population of coconut crabs is also decreasing in consequence of illegal capture as a food supply.
To revise the worsened situation and declare the termination against unlawful harvest, the “Love Tender Save the Crabs” activity was launched by the Forestry Bureau and the Forest and Nature Conservation Police Corps. Hopefully the concept of nature protection and law-abidance can be enhanced.
The activity was held from June 11th to June 14th, 2007, at Orchid Island and Green Island. Many organizations partook in the event, which included the Taitung County Government, Taitung County Police Station, East Coast National Scenic Area Administration, Taipei Zoo, Green Island Township Office, Orchid Island Township Office and the local environmental protection groups. The academic research results also have been revealed in this activity to power the events issue. For the long term preservation of the endangered, protected coconut crabs (Birgus latro) and to ban the law-breaking cases, the authorities will impose ambush clampdown from time to time.
The coconut crab (Birgus latro) is the only kind of Crustacea included in the list of Protected Species around the Taiwan area. Once their habitat is damaged, it is important to make a recovery of the environment besides strengthening the concept of natural conservation. The Forestry Bureau hopes in the future that the home of the coconut crabs can remain undisturbed. Let the wild animals live in a true paradise.
