“One Person One Tree Subscription Reforestation Movement” Greening the Wasteland in 6 YearsOn Sept. 21st, 2001, the Forestry Bureau launched the “One Person One Tree Subscription Reforestation Movement- Roots the Earth and Holds Taiwan” after the severe typhoon Taojhih swept Taiwan. People were encouraged to subscribe NT$100 per tree to the specific site which needed to be reforested. The following year, April 14th, 2002, all the subscribers who sponsored the reforestation of the Wanling and Shanyang Sections of the protected forest at Dadu Mountain, Taichung County, were invited to plant the trees at the scene.
Six years from that time, the wasteland has now become a green Taiwan Acacia forest, and also it was time to transfer the supervision of the forest back to the land-owner, the Taichung County Government. Hence on July 17th this year, the Nantou Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau, who used to take care of the trees, invited the subscribers back to the mountain to witness the handing-over ceremony and enjoy a walk in the forest they have devoted themselves to.
‘When the movement began, the whole mountain was so barren even without a tree on it’, the Director of the Nantou Forest District Office Tian Jhih-Cheng, recalled. ‘During the tree planting activity on April 14th, 2002, all the subscribers came to plant the trees by themselves. It was quite touching seeing people scattered on the mountain putting effort into reforesting the wasteland.’ Within the following 6 years, the Forestry Bureau had overcome the poor condition of the soil, the dry environment and the threat of forest fire, which all together made the 101.95ha. harsh environment enriched with green forest today. With the luxurious shading of the trees, the function of the stand is more than forest protection for the soil conservation itself, but also serves as a forest park for the people. Every morning and evening, the residents enjoy a walk and the fresh air under the gentle breeze and the flowing sound of the trees. The forest nowadays has become a wonderful recreational area for vital, healthy and leisurely outdoor activities.
After 6 years of tending, the authority of the stand is being transferred from the Forestry Bureau to the land-owner, the Taichung County Government. On July 15th, the handing-over ceremony, along with the walking, lottery and treasure hunting events was held by the Nantou Forest District Office. Director Tian invited all the sponsors and the residents to witness the accomplishment of the reforestation as well as the ceremony, and to enjoy the festivities.
