The mountains in Chiayi County connect one another except Duli Mountain which stands by itself. That is why it is called Duli (independent, literally) Mountain. The trail was opened by the pioneers to carry produce down the mountain to exchange for daily commodities. During the Japanese Rule, the Ali Mountain Forest Railway was built to transport lumber. It circled Duli Mountain three times to reach the top and the trail became the only one in Taiwan that runs along a railway all the way up. The landscape changes along the way. Visitors can not only see the rive valley, the railway and distant mountains but also overlook Zhangnaoliao Village and the spiraling railway from different directions and different angles three times.
