Branch Office Overview
1. Location and Jurisdiction
The jurisdiction of the Chiayi Branch is located on the southwestern slopes of
the southern Central Mountain Range, covering areas within Yunlin, Chiayi,
Tainan, and Kaohsiung. It manages four working circles including Alishan,
Yushan, Dapu, and Yujing, comprising 575 compartments with a total area of
134,274 hectares. Since 2003, the Branch has formally taken over 10,465.15239
hectares of protected forests formerly entrusted to the Forestry Bureau by
Chiayi County, Chiayi City, and Tainan City. Between 2005 and 2015, it also
assumed responsibility for 4,791 plots of forestry land previously managed by
the National Property Administration, with an area of 5,309.172422 hectares.
In total, the Branch manages approximately 150,048 hectares.
2. Forest Distribution
The jurisdiction features pronounced elevation variations, spanning tropical,
subtropical, temperate, and alpine zones, which form vertical forest belts.
These include broadleaf forests, coniferous and broadleaved mixed forests, and
coniferous forests. The primary conifer species are Taiwan red cypress, Taiwan
cypress, Japanese cedar, China fir, and other pines, while the broadleaf trees
are mainly composed of camphor, Nanmu, Castanopsis, and oak families.
3. Forest Stock
The total forest stock measures 40,771,518 cubic meters. Natural forests
account for 22,937,918 cubic meters, averaging 374.57 cubic meters per
hectare, while plantations comprise 17,833,600 cubic meters, averaging 466.37
cubic meters per hectare.
4. Forest Zoning
The managed forest land is categorized into four major types: Forest
Recreation Areas (1,976 hectares), Nature Reserves (23,300 hectares), Forest
Management Areas (19,810 hectares), and National Land Protection Areas (89,188
hectares), totaling 134,274 hectares.
