Branch Office Overview
The jurisdiction of the Yilan Branch extends from coastal mangrove forests to
alpine areas at 3,600 meters above sea level, covering climatic zones from
subtropical to temperate and subalpine. This diversity has fostered abundant
forest resources. According to the Fourth National Forest Resource Survey, 75%
of the forest area under its management is natural forest, while 25% is
plantation. Timber stock includes 10,294,886 cubic meters of conifers and
28,252,398 cubic meters of broadleaf trees. Plantation forests account for
12,317,402 cubic meters and represent substantial economic value. Coniferous
species such as Taiwan red cypress, Taiwan cypress, and Japanese cedar make up
approximately 52% of the total timber volume, followed by other economically
valuable broadleaf species.
Among the various forest types, the cypress forests of Qilan and Taipingshan
are particularly renowned. These ancient giants, many over one thousand years
old, are regarded as a shared national treasure. The beech forests in the
Tongshan area represent the southernmost known distribution of the genus
worldwide and are the largest pure beech forest discovered in Taiwan. Taiwan
Cow-tail Fir has highly restricted populations at the northern and southern
ends of the island. Consequently, habitats of Taiwan Cow-tail Fir along the
Gupoliao and Jingualiao streams in Pinglin have long been designated as nature
reserves under the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. Additionally, the
mangroves at the Tamsui River estuary form the northernmost and largest pure
stand of Kandelia candel in Taiwan. Beyond timber and plant resources, the
forests support over 30 species of mammals, more than 200 species of birds,
and over 70 species of amphibians and reptiles. Among these are rare and
endangered species listed under the Act on Wildlife Conservation. These
forests provide critical habitats that sustain the survival of such species
while maintaining the region's rich and diverse ecological environment.
