The first road to climb over the Coastal Mountains to connect to the eastern coastline and the Huadong Rift Valley, this trail used to be an important route that made marriages between people from different villages, preaching of missionaries and transportation of goods possible. The Antong Mountain-crossing Ancient Trail became deserted after the 1970s. In 2002, the Forest Bureau made plans to repair it and hired specialists to conduct surveys. The east section was too remote and therefore not worth fixing. On the other hand, the west section was valuable for cultural and ecological tours. The reconstruction was completed in 2008.
