Happen Nature Reserve is called Amazon basin of Taiwan, because it was rich with epiphytes. A low altitude original broad-leaved forest is reserved and it's rare in Taiwan. Happen Nature Reserve is also the hunting ground of Atayal tribe in the early time. The natural broad-leaved forest here is complex and has rich layers. Its crown canopy is consisted of several kinds of trees such as Fagaceae, Lauraceae, Theaceae, Ebenaceae and Juglandaceae. Blastus cochinchinensis occupies the bush layer and Diplazium dilatatum takes the rest. Two clear streams, Happen River and Cukeng River, run through the forest by two sides. Around river and forest area there is a complex ecosystem. Onychostoma barbatulum and Candidia barbatus are fish that are most common in this area. Butterflies and moths are also common as insects. Rare animals such as Rhacophorus taipeianus, rare snake, Muntiacus reevesi, Macaca cyclopis, Manis pentadactyla, Herpestes urva can be seen as well as Rhyacornis fuliginosus and Enicurus scouleri are the most common birds in this area.
