There are various kinds of bird in this Reserve, where one can see Honey Buzzard, Formosan Brown Bullfinch, Formosan Steer's Babbler, Formosan Yuhina, White-eared Sibia, Formosan White-tailed Blue Robin, Formosan Blue Shortwing, Formosan Pygmy Wren Babbler, Formosan Red-headed Babbler, Formosan White-eyed Nun Babbler, Formosan Yellow-bellied Bush Warbler, Formosan Bush Warbler, Formosan Rufous-bellied Blue Flycatcher and Formosan Rufous Breasted Blue Flycatcher etc. In terms of plants, there is a rare aquatic plant - Sparganium fallax. There is also an extensive forest with structurally completed yellow cypress, a dominant tree species in this Reserve, which make Yuanyang Lake Reserve the area with highest ratio of this rare Taiwan cypress.
