Million years ago, when the volcanoes were active, the lava broke through from the sea bed and got chilled by water. The lava was freeze and became the basalt. That’s how Peng-hu was formed. The ocean around the islands is where the trend, south monsoon and tides intersect. Therefore, it has been an excellent fishing area since ancient time and attract large amount of birds to breed here. Though the tourism has been booming, Peng-hu has been facing the stress as well. In order not to interrupt the birds, local government send personnel to patrol the area regularly.
