"Jiujiu" means "ninety-nine", which signifies the continuous and extending mountains and peaks of the Jiujiu Peaks. Geologically, Jiujiu Peaks belong to the Huoyenshan conglomerate layer of the upper Toukoshan formation. It is prone to rain erosion and thus many sharp peaks and deep ditches are formed. Moreover, the Jiujiu peaks is located at Wu Xi River where the hollowing out of the stream often leads to collapse, leaving this area with steep and precipitous cliffs. In order to protect the spectacular geological scene, Jiujiu Peaks Nature Reserve was established. Basic profiles of the fauna and the flora in the area were documented to better understand how the change of the habitat affects the number of fauna and flora, as well as their resilience. Since then, a number of species and rare flora have been investigated and protected by the endemic center.
