Special Topographic and Ecological Phenomena

The special topographic and ecological phenomena is a new category added in the 2016 amendment to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. This category was added to address the need for preserving unique natural geological and topographical landscapes in small areas, maintaining their natural heritage value, and avoiding the strict access restrictions of nature reserves. These natural monuments can also be classified as Category III (Natural Monument or Feature) protected areas in the IUCN Protected Area Categories System. To date, a total of 15 special topographic and ecological phenomena have been designated by the County or City Government.
