After bamboo has been processed into various products, the disposal of the remaining waste materials is also an expense for the factory. These waste materials have now found a destination to create a win-win situation for the industry and the environment: biomass pellet fuel. Zhushan Township in Nantou County is a major domestic bamboo industry hub. At present, it produces about 15-20 metric tons of bamboo waste materials every day. Through the "Domestic Bamboo Production and Supply Chain Establishment and Technology Promotion Plan", the Forestry Bureau has established a "Bamboo Innovative Technology Service Group" in cooperation with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). They will assist the industry in technological improvement and have successfully matched the bamboo waste material supplier "Hongyuanhang" with the raw pellet fuel producer "Shengfa Enterprise", and both parties will be entering into cross-industry cooperation. The signing ceremony took place today (May 23), witnessed by the Forestry Bureau and the ITRI. The originally bothersome bamboo waste materials will be reused in a new way, creating a new milestone in an environmentally-friendly circular economy. Due to the rapid growth of bamboo, it is ready to be used as material in 4 years. Compared with forest trees which take 20 years to mature and 30-50 years before it can be used commercially, bamboo resources have become a globally recognized green industry with great development potential. According to the Forestry Bureau, the annual production volume of domestically produced bamboo is about 30,000-40,000 metric tons. In the past, bamboo waste materials could be used as raw materials for bamboo pulp in paper mills. But in recent years, bamboo pulp paper mills have been moved overseas due to industrial transformation, and bamboo waste disposal had become a great burden to the bamboo processing industry. In light of this, the Forestry Bureau and ITRI jointly established the Bamboo Innovative Technology Service Group in 2018. After more than a year of in-depth study of the bamboo industry hubs to hold actual investigations to gain understanding of the industry's predicament, it was found that the first thing that needs to be solved is the disposal of bamboo processing waste. Therefore, the service group connected and matched the businesses through the industry chain, where the businesses jointly invest in production equipment, while the technology service group provide a technical support platform. According to the Forestry Bureau, the full-load production capacity of raw pellet fuel of Shengfa Enterprise can reach up to 70 metric tons per day. However, due to the lack of wood flour raw materials, it can only produce about 20 metric tons per day. After providing technical guidance to Hongyuanhang for processing 10-15 metric tons of bamboo waste material per day to replace some of the raw materials, Shengfa Enterprise has already increased production by 300-400 metric tons per month. Cross-industry cooperation such as this not only resolves the urgent needs of bamboo waste processing, but also solves the issue of raw material shortage in the biofuel industry. The Forestry Bureau emphasized that the technology service group established to revitalize the development of the bamboo industry will take the initiative to discover problems. In addition, through the bamboo technology promotion and trading platform established by the Taiwan Bamboo Technology Consultation Center, the technology service group can provide the matching of the supply and demand sides or the related technical support. We hope to construct a comprehensive production and sales chain from bamboo material production, processing and utilization, to marketing, and achieve a win-win sustainable environment model.
