When bamboo is mentioned, people usually think of the tasty bamboo shoots or household essentials such as bamboo clothes rods, bamboo brooms, and bamboo chopsticks. But with the advancement of technology, the application of bamboo nowadays may overturn your expectations. Together with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), the Forestry Bureau established the Bamboo Industry Innovation and Technology Team through the Construction and Technology Promotion Plan for the Domestic Bamboo Production and Marketing Supply Chain. In the past two years, it has successfully matched and mentored a number of innovative bamboo businesses. This morning (Nov. 22nd), the Taiwan Bamboo Industry Innovation and Technology Achievement Presentation was held at the Taiwan Makino Bamboo Tayan Aboriginal Industry Development Association. From handmade glasses fashioned from bamboo strips, bamboo skateboards, and bamboo bags to bamboo drinking straws, the Innovation and Technology Team assisted entrepreneurs to use the natural features of bamboo materials with ingenious creativity that breaks away from conventions, as to develop many innovative bamboo products. It is hoped that this will bring new opportunities to the bamboo industry in Taiwan. Every piece of work at this achievement presentation demonstrated the entrepreneurs' ideas and persistence in bamboo creation. Mr. Liu Chang-fei of Flexbamboo Handmade Eyewear developed handmade glasses using bamboo strips for the frame. The brand's slogans are "preserving handmade quality" and "technological precision". The bamboo glasses designed by Mr. Hong Yan-chu of Mr. Bamboo incorporate elements of traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry. Each creation counts with a deep theme and story, and is worth a try, with value for collection. Another mentoring case worth mentioning is the bamboo skateboard developed by youth entrepreneur Li Tong at his personal studio. When he was studying at university, Li Tong was the president of the school skateboarding club. Due to his passion for skateboarding, he wanted to create customized bamboo skateboards. Therefore, under matchmaking by the Technology Team, he developed innovative bamboo skateboards that combine bamboo lumber composite materials with bamboo weaving to enhance the toughness and abrasion resistance of skateboards. These skateboards are not only very unique and worthy of being collected, but they also have a high market development potential. This achievement presentation also specially invited our friends from Qapu Tribe of the Atayal people in Fuxing District, Taoyuan City. They shared their experience of using bamboo forest resources for the positive development of mountain villages. This was also achieved by the Technology Team. They performed in-depth visits to settlements based around the bamboo industry. After the onsite visits, the Technology Team learned about the difficulties in the industry, and assisted the tribe to establish the Taiwan Makino Bamboo Tayan Aboriginal Industry Development Association. In addition, the 34-hectare Makino Bamboo Sustainable Development Demonstration Zone was established to use bamboo grading technology to provide standardized bamboo materials to the market, as well as effectively eliminate waste from bamboo processing and related issues through cross-industry cooperation, thus greatly increasing the income from bamboo production. According to the Forestry Bureau, bamboo has a fast growth rate and high prolificacy, and is ready to be used as a material in just four years. Bamboo resources have become a globally recognized green industry with great potential for development. In recent years, the Forestry Bureau established the Bamboo Industry Innovation and Technology Team through this plan to revitalize the development of the bamboo industry. In addition, the Bamboo Technology Consulting Center was also set up to provide a matchmaking platform for the promotion of bamboo technology and bamboo micro-industries. The above-mentioned innovative products are the fruits of painstaking labor by these dreamers and creators, developed in cooperation through this platform.
