Service for the Mianyue Line of the Alishan Forest Railway has been suspended for a long time due to damages sustained during the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. Recently, the number of applications for entry to the Mianyue Line area has increased each month due to promotion by online celebrities and media. With the large number of people entering and exiting the area, there have been problems such as littering and unapproved entry into the Taiwan Pleione Nature Reserve. The Chiayi Forest District Office of the Forestry Bureau not only sends staff to clean up the environment every week, but has also built two large latrine pits to improve the surrounding facilities, and has been cracking down on visitors entering the nature reserve without a permit since September. From September 1st to 3rd, 425 people applied for permission to enter the nature reserve, and six people were found to have entered illegally. Forest District Office Disciplining Violators on the Spot According to the Chiayi Forest District Office, continuous inspections since September 1st had resulted in the detection of three groups (a total of six people) who entered the nature reserve without a permit on September 2nd. The Forest District Office immediately confirmed that these visitors had entered illegally, and issued a report to the violators on the spot for contravening the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, while the violators will subsequently be officially fined. If the violator does not object to the fine within 30 days after receiving the ticket, he or she will be fined from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 according to Article 108 of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. Do Not Enter the Forests in Ignorance of the Law The Chiayi Forest District Office requests that hikers follow the seven principles of the "Leave No Trace" movement in order to protect mountain and forest resources and maintain environmental sustainability, as well as to comply with relevant laws and regulations. According to the Forest District Office, after the entry permit to the nature reserve has been approved according to Article 86 of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, visitors must bring along the "Nature Reserve Entry Permit" and the relevant documents to enter the nature reserve for inspection by the Forest District Office staff. The Forest District Office appeals to members of the public to abide by the law so that they can enjoy the natural beauty of the forest and avoid the inconvenience of violating regulations.
