Members of the Public Required by Law to Apply for Entry to the Jiujiufeng Nature Reserve

Recently, hikers have been sharing the beautiful view from the vantage point of Jiujiufeng on the Internet, which has prompted many tourists to go visit in person. The Nantou Forest District Office would like to remind the public that as the route is located within the Jiujiufeng Nature Reserve, visitors are required to apply for an entry permit before entering, in order to avoid being subject to penalties for violating the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.
The Jiujiufeng Nature Reserve was established on May 22, 2000 to preserve the special landscape of the landslides caused by the tremors of the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. It covers an area of over 1,212 hectares, including Wufeng District and Taiping District in Taichung City, as well as Caotun Township and Guoxing Township in Nantou County. The reserve is under the strict protection of the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, which allows the landscape to evolve naturally without human interference and the organisms that inhabit the environment to recuperate and thrive. The reserve also provides a site for ecological conservation, scientific research, and environmental education tours.
Members of the public who wish to enter the nature reserve for environmental education purposes should visit the "Nature Reserve Entry Application System" via the Forestry Bureau website 5 to 60 days before their intended entry date. Visitors must bring along the "Nature Reserve Entry Permit" and an "Identity Document" for inspection by the Forest District Office staff. Visitors should also note that it is not a general hiking and recreational trail as the terrain in the area is steep and prone to landslides and falling rocks during heavy rainfall or typhoons. Visitors should carry out self-risk assessment and prepare the necessary equipment and protective gear.
At present, the Nantou Forest District Office has set up signs at the boundary of the nature reserve, and will periodically conduct conservation patrols of the Jiujiufeng Nature Reserve with the forest police. Anyone who is found without an entry permit will be fined from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 according to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. Hikers are requested to observe and cooperate with the relevant regulations to avoid breaking the law.
