To prevent illegal logging and protect Taiwan's valuable natural resources, starting on December 1, 2022, the export of four endemic precious woods in Taiwan, namely the Taiwan red cypress (Chamaecyparis formosensis), Taiwan cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa var. formosana), Taiwan Incense Cedar (Calocedrus macrolepis var. formosana), and stout camphor tree (Cinnamomum kanehirae), their timber, as well as carved figures and artworks made from these woods will be controlled. The Council of Agriculture (COA), Executive Yuan, stated that in order to prevent the export of illegally-logged precious forest resources, the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), in accordance with the provisions of Article 11 of the Foreign Trade Act, announced that starting on December 1, people in Taiwan who intend to export or take abroad the above-mentioned four precious woods or their timber, as well as those who want to conduct a one-time export or take abroad carved figures or artworks made from these woods with a combined weight of 5kg under the same C.C.C code must acquire the MIT wood certificate (TAP, CAS, QR Code). In addition, people must declare these items to Customs in advance and attach the relevant approval documents issued by the COA. Carved figures and artworks weighing less than 5kg are exempt from submitting the approval documents, but they should still be declared to Customs in advance if necessary. The Forestry Bureau further mentioned that in order to issue approval documents, the COA has established the "Guidelines for the Issuance of Approval Documents for the Export of Specific Forest Products."
