The awards ceremony for the 2026 FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards, the most prestigious global award for excellence in architecture, took place in Vienna, Austria, on June 11. The “Restoration, Revitalization and Reuse of the Taiwan Government-General Sanrinka Dormitory Complex x 0km” project, undertaken by the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (FANCA), received international recognition and won the Gold Award, the highest honor, in the Heritage Category. Coincidentally, the FANCA had just completed the publication of Historical Materials of the Forest Management Project Surveys, a collection of historical materials from the Japanese colonial era on June 15. After eight years of effort, the FANCA has completed the restoration of historical relics from the era of the Sanrinka of the Taiwan Government-General, under the period of the Japanese colonial government, which holds a pioneering position in Taiwan’s forestry history. These relics have also been put into use once more. This was achieved through the restoration of the staff dormitory complex, as well as the compilation and publication of century-old forestry surveys. The restoration work surrounding the Sanrinka also helped to piece together important historical memories of forest management in Taiwan. Director General Lin Hwa-Ching of the FANCA said that the restoration of buildings in the staff dormitory complex of the Sanrinka and the research on the historical materials from the Sanrinka’s Forest Management Project were both critical in reconstructing Taiwan’s forestry history. However, due to the differences in the nature of the work, they were handled by different units within the FANCA. After facing many difficulties and challenges in their respective efforts, they both recently welcomed good news within the same week: winning an international award and being officially published. This coincidence brought great joy and satisfaction to all participating personnel. The Sanrinka Dormitory Complex of the Taiwan Government-General comprises wooden dormitory buildings left over from the Sanrinka during the Japanese colonial period. It was designated as a municipal historic site and historical building of Taipei City in 2006 and is one of the few remaining dual-unit Japanese-style building complexes with double foyers in Taiwan. The FANCA spent eight years promoting the restoration and revitalization of the site, overcoming numerous challenges such as wooden construction, urban environment construction, and cultural asset preservation. By incorporating traditional construction methods with non-destructive testing techniques, the FANCA was able to fully preserve this precious forestry cultural asset in the heart of Taipei. In March 2024, the FANCA entrusted the management of the site to Da Bo Wu Ting Co., Ltd. under the CMP Group, and named it “0km.” The naming of the Sanrinka Dormitory Complex of the Taiwan Government-General as “0km” symbolizes a return to the origins of the land and forest. The overall site has been planned with five green spaces, each with a different theme and rich forest elements. The project also collaborates with the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute to plant and restore Taiwan’s unique and endangered plants. With “nature, life, and rediscovery” as its core spirit, the venue brings together mountain forest products, food and beverages, exhibitions, and educational promotion, enabling people to rediscover Taiwan’s forest culture and natural resources even in an urban setting. 0km has now become a popular tourist attraction that incorporates history, culture, and lifestyle aesthetics. The “Conservation Station” of the Sanrinka Dormitory Complex of the Taiwan Government-General, which was the first to be restored in 2017, has since hosted more than 10 exhibitions on the themes of forestry culture and nature conservation. “Woodⁿ,” an experience center for domestic timber, showcases a collection of furniture and cultural and creative products from domestic timber manufacturers, creating an experiential space imbued with the warm and inviting atmosphere of wood. In 2025, the FANCA also held the “0km: Revisiting the Sanrinka Special Exhibition,” guiding visitors on a journey back in time where they learned more about the workers who lived in the Sanrinka dormitory complex a century ago and explored the fruitful results of their forestry survey work. The FANCA pointed out that the Sanrinka Dormitory Complex of the Taiwan Government-General won the Excellence Award at the FIABCI-Taiwan Real Estate Excellence Awards in 2025. This year, it has won the Gold Award under the Heritage Category of the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards. This is a high accolade in recognition of the FANCA’s efforts in the preservation and revitalization of cultural heritage. In the future, the FANCA will continue to focus on preserving historical memory, promoting forestry culture, and deepening the connection between people and nature, so that forestry cultural heritage can become an important force driving sustainable development.
