Mt. Dawu, the highest peak in the south of the Central Range, with cliffs and steep slopes in its eastern and western side, reserves a large original broad-leaved forest in Dawushan Nature Reserve's lower and middle altitude areas because it may be too hard for human to walk across the reserve. Moreover, there isn't any road in its middle and higher altitude areas. Mt. Dawu, reserves an entire and continuous forest form from low to high altitude because of its height. It's a rarely seen landscape in Taiwan. The yearly rainfall, as large as 2,500-3,000 mm. falls in summer. In addition, the sharply dropping elevation shapes many waterfalls, potholes, torrents, abysses and lakes in the Reserve with numerous rivers and cliffs. In this Reserve, there are rare plants such as Amentotaxus formosana, Keteleeria davidiana and rare animals such as Ursus thibetanus formosanus, Lophura swinhoii, Syrmaticus mikado, Spizaetus nipalensis, and Deinagkistrodon acutus.
