Wazihwei Nature Reserve

Located at the left bank of Tamsui River estuary, the lagoon landform of Wazihwei provides the perfect habitat for Kandelia obovata, and generates a rich and diverse estuarine mangrove system. Wazihwei is the mangrove conservation area at the highest latitude of the world. The most precious flora in the area includes Kandelia obovata, which is of great research value in phytogeography. Besides mangroves, the resisting drought and salt enduring Spinifex littoreus, Imperata cylindrica and Ipomoea pes-caprae are also the representative flora of the area. There are roughly 80 species of vascular plants. You can spot Phragmites communis, Spinifex littoreus and so on. Shellfish and fish also thrive at Wazihwei. One can often see Mictyris brevidactylus flipping and foraging in the mud at low tide. Wazihwei is also where migratory birds visit, and the most known kind is the Egret eulophotes, which IUCN recognized as a vulnerabl species.
