Wuweigang is the mouth of an estuary suffering from heavy siltation. In addition to beaches, wind-break forests, grassland, there are also aquatic environments, such as rivers, lakes, and swamps, which provide a wide variety of food sources for waterbirds. Bubbling fountains rich in iron, which paint the nearby water with a rusty color, create a special image in this area. Thanks to biodiversity and the fact that Wuweigang Waterbird Refuge happens to be on the travel route of migratory birds, this place is one of the two major wintering sites for the Anatidae family in northern Taiwan. A total of 170 bird species in 35 families have been observed and documented here. Between October to April the next year, thousands of waterbirds, mostly the common teal, and some spot-billed ducks and the northern shovelers, gather near this wild habitat.
