The 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition will be taking place at the Houli Horse Ranch and Forest Expo Site in Taichung from November 3, 2018 to April 24, 2019. After being awarded the “Excellent Exhibitor Image Award” at the TaiPei Building Show last year, the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion”, developed in a collaboration between the Forestry Bureau, NTU Experimental Forest, and eight domestic timber producers, have been invited by the Taichung City Government to incorporate the Flora Exposition theme “Sustainable Homeland” to create the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion - Taiwan Wood Pavilion” to reopen to the public. The pre-opening ceremony took place this morning (10/25), at the opening press conference, the waste application of domestic timber materials was introduced to the public, ushering in the six-month expo with green sustainability.

Since the announcement of the “National Year of Domestic Timber” by the Forestry Bureau last year (2017), the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion - Forest House” was launched in the hopes of revitalizing the timber industry of Taiwan to create healthy forests and establish domestic timber brands, while the focus this years is on the applications of domestically-produced timber and waste recycling. The Taiwan Wood Pavilion exhibition site is fully constructed from local wood and bamboo materials, where each plank, each structure, and even each piece of furniture has been created from the high-quality wood and bamboo, as well as the excellent craftsmanship of Taiwan. Furthermore, the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion - Taiwan Wood Pavilion” is the only mobile exhibition hall that can be disassembled out of the entire Flora Expo, after the expo has ended, it can be recycled and reused to fully demonstrate the environmentally-friendly ethos of loving and cherishing goods. The Forestry Bureau said that this year’s Taichung World Flower Exposition has based the planning around “green and low-carbon” and the Bureau sponsored up to 479.878 cubic meters of Taiwania cypress and Formosan China-fir timber to provide the expo venues with environmental imagery and installation art. We hope that the public will enjoy discovering the traces of local Taiwanese timber throughout the Flora Expo venues.

The Forestry Bureau also stated that this expo will adhere to the spirit of sustainable use. After the exhibition, the domestically-produced wood and bamboo will be donated to schools or factories to be made into study desks and chairs, while others will be given to tribal communities or the public to be turned into craftworks; others will be left on site to become installation art and continue to accompany the residents of Taichung to become a leisure and relaxation destination. Overall, in order to ensure these domestic timber materials are properly utilized, the Forest Bureau has spared no efforts!

The Forest Bureau and the NTU Experimental Forest also published the "Technology of Creating Composite Wood from Domestic Wood and Bamboo Waste" to teach the public how to process the waste generated in the processing of domestic timber. Through heat-pressing, mixing, and laminating, composite wood boards can be produced to become a “good material” with high levels of utilization and durability. After these raw waste materials are recycled and processed, they are heat-pressed into boards according to different composite combinations, not only are these stronger than the composite wood commonly seen on the market, the reuse of waste materials also creates greater economic and environmental benefits.

From November 3, 2018, the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion - Taiwan Wood Pavilion” and the Taichung World Flower Exposition will be launched at the same time. The Forestry Bureau welcomes the public to come and experience the wonders of the domestically-produced timber!
