This year’s Taipei Building Show specially chose 30 exhibitors to receive the “Excellent Exhibitor Image Award.” The results were announced at the awards ceremony today (10th) at the Nangang Exhibition Center. Co-organized by the Forestry Bureau and the NTU Experimental Forest Management Office, the Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion is a joint industry, government, academia, and research effort. This year’s theme (2022) was “Architecture/Carbon” marking the sixth consecutive year of the exhibition. After being evaluated by the architects on the Taipei Building Show committee on criteria such as “product practicality innovation,” “furnishing and overall experience,” and “professional interpretation,” the Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion stood out among 500 exhibitors, winning the “Excellent Exhibitor Image Award” for the sixth year in a row. The Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion has a perfect record at the convention, taking home the award every time it participates, and showing the industry the unlimited potential of Taiwanese wood and bamboo. The Forestry Bureau pointed out that in order to promote domestic timber, the design planning for this year’s exhibition (2022) reflects global carbon neutrality and seeks to highlight the importance of forests in carbon reduction issues. The transportation of imported timber leaves a large carbon footprint; in addition, the importation of timber raises many concerns centered around the destruction of natural forests and even tropical rain forests. To meet the needs of human activities while preserving natural forests, it is essential that we carry out effective management and utilization of artificial forests. Using domestic timber can both protect forests from excessive deforestation and can prevent soil deterioration in forest regions caused by excessive settlement. The Forestry Bureau has been increasing resource allocation from the public and private sectors over the past few years to achieve sustainable forest management, preservation, and restoration. This will bring timber production and consumption more in line with the principles of sustainability, helping us reduce our carbon footprint and protect biodiversity. The overall structure of the Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion (including wooden frame, bamboo frame, wall panels, wood and bamboo ceiling, display tables, etc.) was made of carbon negative materials such as Taiwania cypress, Japanese cedar, Chinese fir, moso bamboo, and Makino bamboo. Approximately 15 cubic meters of wood and bamboo materials were used, with 3,375 kilograms of carbon fixed in the building materials of the exhibition site. These carbon negative materials will continue to be reused after the exhibition, allowing carbon to be preserved in the materials for a long time, so as to make full use of the advantages of wood and bamboo materials in the fields of architecture and interior design, and to highlight its environmental education significance. Everyone is encouraged to use domestic timber and bamboo materials, take action to support sustainable consumption, and to enjoy the healthy and comfortable lifestyle brought by wood and bamboo. When people use wood and bamboo building materials, their biggest concerns are usually focused on the safety of the living environment, including fire and weather resistance. The Forestry Bureau has been working with industry, government, academia, and research sectors to revitalize Taiwan’s forest industry and improve processing technologies over the past few years. The latest research and development results were also on display, showing the refinement of processing technologies for wood and bamboo materials, such as modifications, laminated materials, and composite materials, to improve the weather resistance, flame resistance, strength, and corrosion resistance of wood and bamboo materials. Industry operators are also encouraged to obtain certification for their products and use the national standards as gate-keepers, so that consumers can simply check the label and easily purchase the safest and most environmentally friendly carbon negative construction materials. With two days left in this year’s exhibition, professionals and those interested in domestic timber materials are once again invited to not miss out on this opportunity to learn more about the forest industry rooted in the land of Taiwan and be fascinated by domestic green building materials. This Sunday (12/11), there will be two exciting forums on the design and practical applications of domestic timber and bamboo materials. The second generation of creative groups, academics, and industry representatives have been invited to share their practical experience at the “Bamboo Architecture and Forest Railway Emerging Design Exhibition.” In two fascinating discussion sessions, they will talk about the use of domestic timber and bamboo materials in construction, and share their experiences in industry-academia R&D and the refinement of processing technologies. Everyone is invited to come join the event for free at Room 402a, 4/F, Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1. For those who can’t make it to the event, you are welcome to watch the live webcast on the Facebook page of the “Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion.”
