In response to illegal logging of natural forests which leads to the destruction of mountain and forest resources, and precious ecosystems, the Forestry Bureau of the Council of Agriculture announced that the maximum reward for reporting illegal logging has been increased to NT$5 million. The bureau is calling on the public to actively report the illegal activity, which would not only help protect Taiwan’s environment, but also allow good Samaritans to receive real cash rewards for doing what is right. The Forestry Bureau has recently announced amendments to Articles 30, 33 and 40-1 of the Forest Protection Act, raising the maximum reward for reporting illegal logging from NT$3 million to NT$5 million. The measure aims to encourage the public to come forward and make a report so as to work together to crack down on illegal loggers and protect Taiwan’s beautiful mountains and forests. The Forestry Bureau said that the reward for reporting illegal logging will be paid in two stages. In the first stage, following a report of illegal logging and the police referring the case to the District Attorney’s Office, the informant can receive a reward of NT$50,000. If the case is prosecuted by the District Attorney’s Office, the informant can receive a reward equivalent to 10% of the market value of the stolen goods. The maximum reward has been increased to NT$5 million and the bureau hopes that the public is motivated to provide information. To make reporting channels more diversified, in addition to calling the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 0800-000-930, the public can also go to the LINE@ Illegal Logging Reporting Station set up by the Forestry Bureau to report the case. More than 2,800 people have already joined the group, which has played a role in many reports. We hope that the people of Taiwan can come together to fight against illegal logging and protect Taiwan’s mountains and forests.
