United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Process

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is one of the earliest and most important international environmental agreements established to address climate change globally. It was adopted in May 1992 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and opened for signature during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June of the same year. The Convention officially entered into force in 1994. As of now, over 190 parties have joined, making it the core platform for global climate action.

The objective of the UNFCCC is to stabilize the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous human interference with the climate system.
