Wildlife Refuges

To protect wild animals and their habitats, since the enactment of the Wildlife Conservation Act in 1989, Taiwan has actively promoted various wildlife conservation efforts and the establishment of wildlife protection zones. Since 1991, in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation Act, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced the designation of Major Wildlife Habitats, and local governments have designated Wildlife Refuges where special protection is needed. To date, a total of 21 Wild Refuges have been designated.

Since April 28, 2018, the Ocean Affairs Council and its affiliated agencies were formally established to handle marine conservation affairs. The responsibilities of the central competent authority for five Wildlife Refuges - the Taoyuan Guan-Xin Algal Reefs Ecosystem Wildlife Refuge, the Matsu islands Tern Refuge, the Mianhua and Huaping Islets Wildlife Refuge, the Penghu County Wang-an Island Green Turtle Nesting Refuge, and the Penghu County Mao Islet Seabird Refuge have been transferred to its jurisdiction.

Maps of terrestrial Wildlife Refuges can be downloaded from the “MOA Open Data” website.
