About the Domestic Timber Mark

:::
Taiwan Wood mark design

What is the "Taiwan Wood" mark?

The domestic forest industry is declining. The root cause lies in the shrinking domestic timber market and as a result, forestry operations fail to bring in enough income for the residents to maintain their livelihood through timber (and bamboo). In order to boost the local timber industry, the Forestry Bureau is committed to brand building for better awareness of domestic timber and bamboo among consumers. This can encourage gradual rise of market demand, drive the growth of production and industry chain, and kick start a sustainable cycle of afforestation, utilization, and reforestation of artificial forests. The Forest Bureau’s strategy of recovering forestry will also start with private forests, allowing residents of mountain villages access to forest resources to improve their income.
In order to give domestic timber and bamboo an “ID,” manufacturers which already acquired the Traceable Agricultural Product (TAP) validation, the Forest Products Certification by CAS (Certified Agriculture Standards), and the QR Code of Taiwan Forest Products Production Traceability System can use the “Domestic Timber and Bamboo Certification Mark (the “Taiwan Wood” mark)” for their processed forest products. This will become synonymous with domestic wood and bamboo products in the future. Consumers can purchase with peace of mind as long as they can recognize the "Taiwan Wood" mark.
The Forestry Bureau encourages consumers to support domestic wood and bamboo products, which are of good quality and durability, and their support also can boost the economy of mountain villages, promote the use of forest land, and reduce the carbon footprint of imported timber due to long-distance transportation across the sea. Therefore, the use of domestic wood and bamboo is an act of "green consumption" that saves energy, reduces carbon emissions, protects the environment, and mitigates global climate change.

“Taiwan Wood” mark

The mark works in tandem with the certification mechanism for domestically produced timber promoted by the Forestry Bureau. It aims to validate the legality of timber sources. The overall design is inspired by the concept of Taiwan's domestically produced timber. Quality production process regulations form a sustainable circle, conveying the concept of sustainable forest management in Taiwan and showing the scalable benefits of Taiwan Wood through the upward-reaching branches. It represents a manufacturing process of Taiwan Wood which includes strategic planting, carbon sequestration, thinning, and processing, before it is transformed into various wood products. As the lumber sequesters carbon and prevents it from being released into the urban environment, the mark features sustainability (a circle) and the branches reaching outward represents the macro networks, suggesting the idea of coexistence and shared prosperity between "forest" and "city”.
The plantation also becomes sustainable due to planned reuse, and thus green consumption can be practiced by tracing this mark. Environmentally friendly and sustainable consumption is a way to slow down the greenhouse effect. Supporting good products equals supporting ecological balance and represents a friendly choice for both our health and the environment. On the practical side, the validated mechanism helps to track down nature-damaging behaviors such as illegal logging and protect the interests of consumers.
