The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (FANCA), Ministry of Agriculture, announced the first “Year of Domestic Timber” in 2017, and since then it has initiated a revitalization of the plantation forest industry as well as actively promoted the use of wood and bamboo timber in Taiwan. In recent years, in addition to the promotion of woodcraft education, the annual Forest Market, and the establishment of a Domestically Produced Timber Taiwan Pavilion at the Taipei Building Show, large-scale exhibitions and sales activities have also been conducted to increase the visibility of domestic timber. Starting today, residents in northern Taiwan now have a unique experiential space where they can get up close and personal with domestic timber. The FANCA has commissioned a professional team to create the first domestic timber product experience center in northern Taiwan, called “Tsong Sen,” within the former dormitory buildings of the Forestry Division under the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office on Jinshan South Road in Taipei. Building materials, furniture, and cultural and creative products from various domestic timber manufacturers have been utilized, with the aim of creating a cozy environment filled with the familiarities of everyday life. Visitors will be able to experience the ambiance of domestic timber using their five senses in a relaxed and enjoyable manner. On September 22, the FANCA invited representatives from various sectors to attend the unveiling of this unique space. Visitors are invited to come and immerse themselves in the historic Japanese-style architectural complex and experience the distinctive charm of domestic timber.
According to the FANCA, the use of domestically produced wood and bamboo timber reduces energy consumption and carbon footprint in the transportation process, and ensures that no harm is done to virgin forests, which has great environmental benefits. In addition, wood is a renewable natural material that is capable of absorbing light and sound, which not only reduces the harm of ambient light to people’s vision and decreases noise in indoor environments, but also helps regulates the temperature and humidity of the environment. The natural fragrance emitted by wood also helps people to find relaxation in their busy lives. The FANCA encourages everyone to use domestically produced wood and bamboo materials to implement green consumption and enjoy the health benefits and comfort brought by wood and bamboo spaces.
“Tsong Sen” is divided into four areas. The “Domestic Timber Exhibition Area” showcases six common domestic timber species (Taiwan red cypress, Taiwania, Japanese cedar, Taiwan acacia, big-leaf mahogany, and camphor wood) where visitors can closely observe and appreciate the details of the wood while learning more about wood; the “Wood Education Experience Area” is an interactive space for adults and children to experience, play, learn, and explore the mysteries of wood materials; the “Wood and Bamboo Corridor” is designed based on a forest-inspired concept, providing the feeling of wandering in a forest through natural lighting; and the “Scenario Experience Area” creates a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere with domestic wood and bamboo furniture, home decors, and cultural and creative products, where visitors can enjoy the pleasant home environment.
Everyone is welcome to visit “Tsong Sen” to experience the unique beauty of domestic wood and bamboo, to see the wonders of harmonious coexistence between forests and people, and to support the green future of a friendly environment through sustainable consumption.
